Consumer spending in 2010: quality not quantity

Caught up in an unprecedented economic crisis, European consumers might have been expected to collapse under the weight of bad news: a global recession, rising unemployment throughout Europe, strained public finances that will need to be redressed sooner or later… We were expecting the mood of consumers to hit a new low in 2009. However, while the score is indeed down on last year’s result (4.2 vs. 4.3), it is almost a relief to see a drop of just one-tenth of a point.
